Division 1 - Maesglas 2 v 1 Llanboidy
Maesglas will be happy to get this game out of the way, in what is always a difficult game against Llanboidy, who with the resources they have always work hard as a team, and you can see why they have picked up the points they have and a with a few more in the bag should hopefully be able to avoid the drop. Saying that though the Blues dominated proceedings, especially in the first half where for all their endeavour and hard work did not see them cruise to a more comfortable win. The Maes Radley strip was in good order before kick-off but the surface deteriorated as the game went on and this played right into Llanboidy hands.
The Blues had numerous chances, but the goal post on two occasions came to the rescue of the away side, a number of shots off target, and also a superb one handed save from Llans' keeper Carwyn Lewis all this making the score line more attractive to Llanboidy at the break, but it was a mistake from the away side keeper Lewis who contributed to the Blues opener after 15 minutes, the ball seemed to be going out for a goal kick, but Blues full of running striker Aled Rees managed to keep the ball in play and found keeper Lewis in his way, a couple of deflections between the players and a corner was awarded by match official Wyn Roberts, and whilst Lewis was arguing the decision.
The corner was whipped in by Rees, and to be fair to Lewis he got back into position to catch the incoming corner, but for whatever reason he spilled the ball and within a flash the ball was hammered into the roof of the net by the Blues top scorer Dai Cole. Aled Rees, ten minutes later claimed the second, a shot from 20 yards was goal bound although it took a deflection from a Llanboidy player and the ball skipped passed the unlucky Lewis.
At the other end Blues keeper Keen had a scare from a corner that seemed to come off Keens chest and was cleared. At the break the Blues were contented, but as the heavens opened the pitch started to spoil the passing football and the Llanboidy side started to gain momentum, and were awarded a penalty midway through the half, a decision which seemed to upset the Blues, Dafydd George who clearly headed the incoming cross was to have leaned all over Llanboidy legendary striker Emyr Davies, referee Roberts did not hesitate and the pen was duly finished off.
The Blues continued to try and play the football and had a couple of clear cut chances, one especially from Llifon Howell who blasted embarrassingly wide from 6 yards out. Llanboidy in the last twenty minutes threw everything into the game and with a bit more luck especially from corners where if one or two miss guided headers had been goal bound may have resulted in a goal. As it was the Blues clung on for the hard earned 3 points, because that's what it was in the end, hard earned against a resilient side. If keeper Lewis stays fit and the team work as hard as they did today then the Foxes can escape the drop.
As for the Blues a couple of fines were dished out at the post match discussion with newly elected fines chairman Dai Cole. The fines for worst player of the game were a joint effort, Bleddyn Davies for still being half asleep and Llifon Howell whose miss was inexcusable. Dafydd George for giving a penalty away too.
But the serious stuff awaits in the New Year..... A chance to grab a quarter final place in the Emrys Morgan Cup, but Crannog will be saying the same thing, so a tough game awaits the Blues at the Urdd Camp. |
